چکیده

This study was designed to investigate the biomechanics of human head injury with a focus on skull fracture due to side impact loading. Temporo-parietal impact tests were conducted using specimens from ten unembalmed post mortem human subjects. The specimens were isolated at the occipital condyle level, and pre-test x-ray and computed tomography images were obtained. They were prepared with multiple triaxial accelerometers and subjected to increasing velocities (ranging from 4.9 to 7.7 m/s) using free-fall techniques by impacting onto a force plate from which forces were recorded. A 40durometer padding (50-mm thickness) material covering the force plate served as the impacting boundary condition. Computed tomography images obtained following the final impact test were used to identify pathology. Four out of the ten specimens sustained skull fractures. Peak force, displacement, strain, acceleration, energy, and head injury criterion variables were used to describe the biomechanics, and probability curves were developed using the Kaplan-Meier method to establish tolerance limits.

Head impact biomechanics simulations: a forensic tool for reconstructing head injury?

This paper describes a computer simulation method, which is used widely in engineering design and accident investigation reconstructions, which could constitute a valuable forensic tool for investigating cases of head impact injury and skull fracture. This method, the finite element method, relies on knowing the physical properties and strength of biological materials, including cranial bone an...

Biomechanics of frontal skull fracture.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether an energy failure level applies to the skull fracture mechanics in unembalmed post-mortem human heads under dynamic frontal loading conditions. A double-pendulum model was used to conduct frontal impact tests on specimens from 18 unembalmed post-mortem human subjects. The specimens were isolated at the occipital condyle level, and pre-...

Skull X-rays after trauma: are both laterals necessary?

Eighty-eight sets of skull X-rays, each showing an unequivocal skull fracture, were examined by a radiologist under controlled conditions to see if fractures would be missed if only one lateral view was included in the X-ray series. The fracture sets were mixed at random with four times as many normal sets of skull X-rays and each fracture set was examined on two occasions, once with one latera...

Biomechanics and neuropathology of adult and paediatric head injury.

The objective of this study was to understand the biomechanics in age-related primary traumatic brain injuries (TBI) causing initial severity and secondary progressive damage and to develop strategy reducing TBI outcome variability using biomechanical reconstruction to identify types of causal mechanisms prior to clinical trials of neuro-protective treatment. The methods included the explanatio...

2 Biomechanics of Closed Head Injury

This chapter discusses ways in which the brain is thought to be injured by a blunt impact to the head. The impacting object is assumed to be unlikely to penetrate the skull in the manner of a bullet, for example. The chapter is also concentrated on injuries to the brain, rather than lacerations and abrasions to the scalp or fractures of the skull. Obviously, if the skull is fractured and displa...
